Move from Goal Frustration to Goal ACHIEVEMENT – 3 Key Elements to the ACHIEVEMENT of a goal

Most of us go through the process of goal setting, especially at the beginning of the year, and we get excited about the goals just by thinking about it. We write them down (sometimes) and then we go through our year and….about this time of year….we look at what we have accomplished and what we left on the table.

When we don’t achieve our goals we get frustrated and then comes the blame game, self-doubt and we wonder if this goal was even realistic. Look at your watch for a minute (or your phone), if one part of that watch or phone isn’t working then the whole thing won’t work…it could be one small thing but it can stop everything. This can happen to us with goal achievement when we don’t set realistic goals and apply these 3 key elements.

The three key elements to the ACHIEVEMENT of goals are:

  1. Mindset – this is your attitudes, beliefs, perspective and emotional capability to go through with the goal.
  2. Skillset – what needs to be done, by whom and by when (this is the planning piece).
  3. Actionset – this is the act of taking action toward achievement of the goal.

Focusing on all three of these elements take goals from being possible to being probable. Be realistic based on where you are and your resourcefulness (your ability to get what you need from other things or people). Goals that are set without a realistic plan get you discouraged and impact your mindset. Planning that is done without taking the right action will ensure you don’t achieve your goals.

Try this now: Set one goal over the next 72 hours – something simple, that you have been wanting to do. Identify 3 action steps you could take to achieve it and put it on your calendar. Then say “I will do those 3 things no matter what.” Commit to not allowing distractions get in your way. Reduce these actions to the ridiculous to get in the HABIT of mindset, skillset and actionset and commit to it no matter what.

Why? To teach yourself the process of goal ACHIEVEMENT versus goal SETTING. Goals without a plan activates the motivation set of the brain but ‘no plans’ deactivate the actionset of your brain. This will get you to start building daily habits to achieve versus just planning. The secret to your success is in your daily routine.
